Oh, what great fun we had when aerobics first became popular in the 1970s. Aerobics classes involved rapid stepping patterns, performed to popular music (we insisted) with cues provided by an instructor. In physical exercise, it is complementary to anaerobic exercise. Aerobic literally means "with oxygen," and refers to the use of oxygen in muscles' energy-generating process. Aerobics exercise includes any type of exercise, typically thoseperformed at moderate levels of intensity for extended periods oftime, that maintains an increased heart rate.
These exercises improve your endurance because they use a lot of oxygen. Endurance is the measure of your body's ability to keep up an activitywithout getting tired. The more endurance you have, the longer you can swim, bike, run, dance, and play a sport before tiring out. When muscles are worked nonstop for 15 minutes or more, they need more oxygen to be at their best. Your level of endurance refers to how well your heart and lungs can pump oxygen-rich blood to your muscles. The more oxygen you get, the better you feel.
Aerobics exercise increases your heart rate. In general, these are performed at a moderately high level of intensity over a long period of time. |
