The greatest and most important thing I've learned about it is that it treats the whole person, not just the person's health problems.

Oh, if only I had known that several years ago when I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. The doctor never questioned my diet or lifestyle at all. He simply began prescribing medications to me. When one didn't work quickly enough, he went down the list.

Now, I know better.

Basics of Ayurveda

This alternative medicine integrates mind, body and spirit to maintain Natural Health and Beauty.

Experts trace the beginning of this unique approach to physical health, mental clarity and spiritual fulfillment to the sages of ancient India, the rishis.

Its conspicuous use of the word veda or knowledge, reveals its role in early Hinduism and describes its hallowed place in India.

It isn't just about clearing up symptoms or even curing disease. It's also about restructuring the content of a person's consciousness so that he can be aware of the essential nature and meaning of life. It means the "science of life and longevity" in Sanskrit.

This includes meditation, yoga, massage, herbal medicine and diet.

It could be said that the simple essence is knowledge and awareness of the qualities of nature--called gurvadi gunah.

By understanding the qualities inherent in the environment, in foodstuffs, in activities, etc., one gains an appreciation of their effects on the individual constitution through the principle of similarities; i.e., that similarities cause increase while dissimilarities cause decrease.

Thus hot qualities in the environment or diet will increase hot qualities in the body.

It postulates that every material process or object can either harm or heal a person by influencing that person's unique original constitution(called prakruti).

Of course, the constitution you were born with is affected by day- to-day factors such as your work, the people you spend time with and the foods you eat.

That daily constitution is called vikruti.

An ayurvedic practitioner will assess the qualities of a disorder, the patient's unique prakrti, and his/her influencing factors to arrive at a treatment plan.

The treatment plan will consist of using herbs, therapies, diet, etc., with opposite qualities so as to assist the patient in reestablishing their prakrti.

Ayurveda urges you to face your feelings, to look at your life and make constructive changes, so you may journey farther along the road to optimal physical, emotional and spiritual health.
