Health Risk of Fast Food

The health risk of fast food can be greatly reduced simply by choosing healthy fast foods.

One out of every three American Children born in 2000 will develop diabetes from poor dietary habits.

Fast food is a major player in our nation’s bad eating habits. Unfortunately, it is becoming a staple of modern American lifestyles.

People are acquiring increasingly busier schedules and we have this food in virtually every town.

That makes it seem as though the typical fast food diner is quite inevitable. It is impairing our health and our culture in more ways than one.

Health Food Tips

Fast food and health should be taken seriously by all. Following are some great health food tips.

With the average daily caloric intake between 2,000-2,500 calories, these items can easily account for approximately a quarter of your daily caloric intake.

Add fries and a soda, the calories keep accumulating and you can understand the health risk of fast food.

It is important to watch carefully what you eat, especially at a fast-food restaurant.

Knowing the nutritional content is important. Consumers may want to ask for this information, said NHLBI’s Gina Wei, M.D., project officer for CARDIA. Salads and grilled foods tend to be lower in fat than fried foods, she said.

Keep portion sizes small, and ask that high-fat sauces and condiments, such as salad dressing and mayonnaise, be on the side and use them sparingly to reduce calories, Wei said.

Food For Good Health

By now you are probably wondering, are there any healthy fast foods?

A healthy lifestyle can be maintained by simple everyday things such as exercise and the monitoring of food consumption.

The recent media limelight on the fast food industry has gotten the attention of fast food chains.

They have tried to clean up their act, many fast food restaurants are cutting trans fats from their products and adding healthier options to their menus.

For example, Mc Donald’s added fruit and salad options. Trans fat was seen as the solution to America’s love affair with grease, until its hurried fall from grace. The reduction of trans fat is detrimental to the health of the consumers because trans fat has been linked to clogged arteries and heart diseases. Wendy’s, KFC, and Taco Bell have all cut down their trans fat use while Mc Donalds is just considering this as a corporate change. ‘This is a great step forward. It will make fried products significantly healthier,’ said Michael F. Jacbson.

With the help of Eric Schlosser’s book Fast Food Nation and Morgan Spurlocks’s documentary Super-Size Me, the public is more aware of their eating habits and the associated dangers of such habits.

These types of pressures have also pushed a few of the fast food restaurants towards healthier food, thereby reducing the health risk of fast food.
