Healthy Food Practices
Preserve Good Health

Healthy food practices are sorely needed now.

Fruits and vegetables were plentiful when we were growing up in the south of the U.S.A.

healthy food practices, eating healthy

We picked fruit off the tree and ate it where we stood or played. But, we can’t do that anymore. Now, I have to warn my grandchildren, wash that fruit before you eat it!

It’s a different thing when we can choose foods that have been grown organically.

However, choosing organic foods may not always be possible. That is when healthy food practices is needed.

Washing Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Because pesticides have many uses, we are exposed to them insecticides, herbicides, artificial fertilizers, or growth-stimulators–in a variety of ways–through food, water, and air.

Engage in healthy food practices and reduce the amount of pesticides we consume by doing the following:

Use a soft vegetable brush to wash and scrub the foods thoroughly under running water and then let them soak in water for ten minutes.

Running water has an abrasive effect that soaking does not have. This will help remove bacteria and traces of chemicals from the surface of fruits and vegetables and dirt from crevices. Not all pesticide residues can be removed by washing.

Produce can also be cleaned with nontoxic rinsing preparations, which are available in reputable health food stores.

Peeling and Trimming

Peel fruits and vegetables when possible to reduce dirt, bacteria, and pesticides. Discard outer leaves of leafy vegetables.

If the products are waxed, peel them, as wax cannot be washed away, but remove as thin a layer of peel as possible.

Trim fat from meat and skin from poultry and fish because some pesticides residues collect in fat.

Select a Variety of Healthy Foods

Eat a variety of foods, from a variety of sources.

This will give you a better mix of nutrients and reduce your likelihood of exposure to a single pesticide.

Keep vegetables separate from raw meat, poultry and seafood while shopping, preparing, or storing.

Whenever possible, use healthy food practices.
