History of Organic Food

Organic Food Market

Initially, the history of organic food began with fresh vegetables.

Early organic consumers, looking for essentially chemical free fresh or minimally processed food, had to buy direct from growers.

However, with widespread distribution of organic food, high volume sales through mass outlets, typically supermarkets, is rapidly replacing the direct farmer connection.

In the United States, agricultural products that claim to be "organic" must adhere to the requirements of the Organic Food Act of 1990.

These organic food regulations essentially require that any product that claims to be organic must have been manufactured and handled according to specific National Organic Program requirements.

Organic food growth

Organic farmers realize that the soil is a living entity and that organic practices feed the soil which in turn feed the plant.

Farming organic food is a management intensive, not a materials intensive, technology; materials are a supplementary tool in a balanced farm management program.

Organic farmers attempt to understand and work in harmony with the natural biological systems on the farm, not to override them with chemicals (even naturally derived ones). They strive to develop cultural and biological means of crop nutrition and protection that are balanced, sustainable, and resilient.

Nutrition Health

In recent years, the organic food business has expanded worldwide and continues to grow rapidly.

The U.S Department of Agriculture has put in place a set of national standards that food labeled "organic" must meet, whether it is grown in the United States or imported from other countries.

You must look at organic food labels and watch for signs in the supermarket.

Along with the national organic standards, USDA developed strict organic food labeling rules to help consumers know the exact organic content of the food they buy. The USDA Organic seal also tells you that a product is at least 95 percent organic.

To sum it up, I feel like the history of organic food is just now taking off.

More and more people are realizing the natural health benefits and advantages of organic food.
