Mar 17, 2008, Daily exercise improves quality of life among postmenopausal women

A new study of how exercise can increase the quality of life among postmenopausal women showed that physical training gives energy, vitality and improves emotional state.

This study is a continuation of the Dose Response to Exercise in postmenopausal Women (DREW) study, but this time it shows really great and impressive results.

Mar 17, 2008, Exercise Your Body, Not Your Excuses

If you're exercising more excuses than muscle, you're not alone. Millions of Americans understand the benefits of exercise, yet many of us spend more time making excuses than moving.

"Exercise is probably the closest thing we have to a magic pill for keeping our bodies and minds healthy," says Joe Moore, president and CEO of the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA). "Exercise can make us feel good quickly. Even modest amounts can have health benefits. The important thing is getting started."

Mar 16, 2008, Fitness Forum: The most important muscle you have but never see

It isn’t a muscle that will catch the attention of the opposite sex. It’s not going to pop out of a shirt sleeve and make you look sexy. It’s not even a muscle that most people will know if they are working it correctly.

Ready... It’s Your Heart! That’s right, your heart is the most important muscle you have but never see.

Mar 14, 2008, Exercise your brain: Use it or lose it

Regular physical exercise might help a person lose weight, but more intellectual exercises are important to fend off a brain-stealing disease. Studies show over and over again there’s just no substitute to brain exercise, said Dr. Seema Joshi, an internist and geriatrician with Trinity at Terrace Park in Bettendorf.

I tell my patients to do their usual things in unusual ways, she said, noting that brain exercises can be as simple as taking different routes to work or more complicated, such as learning a foreign language.

Mar 14, 2008, Daughter inspired by mom to exercise

When she was a teenager, Zhanna Pauluhn started exercising with her mother.

Her mother, Lois Ebel, now 75, refused back surgery after suffering a ruptured disk. After spending six weeks in bed and consulting with doctors, she decided to try healing through swimming. Together, mother and daughter would visit the Cottonwood Health Club, now the Niwot Market, to swim and, as her pain diminished, to do aerobics.

Mar 13, 2008, Americans learn bikes cut costs and improve fitness

At a time of soaring gasoline prices, expanding waistlines, and growing worry over climate change, more Americans are getting on their bikes.

Bicycle advocates say the bike should be used for the 40 percent of urban journeys that are less than two miles (3.2 km), especially since 90 percent of those journeys are done by car.

    Mar 12, 2008, Spa with a difference

It seems, spas with doctors is the next big thing. Walk into a spa which has music, scented aroma candles, but here you'll meet a professional doctor rather than a Linda from the North-East.

And order for yourself a quick botox, lunchtime peel, nip-and-tuck liposuction or a nose surgery.

Mar 12, 2008, Exercise may keep you younger

Will you live even longer if you exercise regularly? Hard to say.

Will you live a shorter life if you don't exercise? Probably.

Research suggests that even if you are preprogrammed for a long life, being sedentary increases the odds that you will die before your time.
