Women's Heart Health
Needs Attention

Women's heart health is unobtrusive. Everyone recognizes that heart disease is the primary killer of men.

But few people are aware that this disease also claims the livesof nearly a quarter million American women every year. Of the 600,000 heart attack deaths each year, almost half occur in women.

This number affecting women's heart health equals more than breast cancer, stroke and lung cancer combined.

While heart attack in women are similar in many ways to heart disease in men, differences do exist.

Researchers have been wondering about the disparity in survival between men and women.

Women seem to experience heart attacks differently: While men typically have crushing pain in the middle of the chest that radiates to the left arm, women may have nausea and vague chest discomfort.

These unclear signs can delay treatment.

Women's Heart Health,
Foremost Health Threat

Not surprisingly, research has found that only one in five women know that women's heart health is their foremost health threat.

Cardiovascular disease-also known as atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, or simply heart disease-has been called a silent killer because it often gives no signs before it strikes.

Silent heart attacks (heart attacks with little or no symptoms) are more common among women than among men.

It is a swift killer, frequently causing death within five minutes of onset of symptoms. And it is also nonselective, being the leading cause of death among women as well as men, non-white as well as white Americans.

Women are more likely to encounter delays in establishing the diagnosis of heart attacks than men. This is in part because women tend to seek medical care later than men, and because diagnosing heart attacks in women can sometimes be more difficult than diagnosing heart attacks in men.

Heart Disease

We all need to be concerned about cardiovascular disease, women's heart health, for it can often be prevented through changes in diet, lifestyle and nutrient intake.

Lifestyle changes not only can prevent heart disease, they can also improve the condition of clogged arteries. Such changes should include a low-fat diet and regular exercise, no smoking, alcohol in moderation, and stress-reduction techniques.

Eating Healthy Controls Health

Eating healthy is a great way for women to empower themselves and take control of their health and their heart.

Simple dietary changes can help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk for heart disease. In fact, lowering cholesterol may be as simple as adding some delicious, nutritious almonds to your diet.

Women that eat plenty of these heart healthy natural, organic foods were found to have a 40 percent reduced risk of dying of coronary heart disease.

Women's heart health can be helped by the newest weapons against heart disease, ordinary vitamins. The idea is based on the fact tht LDL cholesterol must be oxidized before it can begin to build up artery-clogging plaque.

Antioxidant vitamins such as E, C, and beta carotene have been shown to block the oxidation process.

Protect women's heart health from heart disease, our nation's number one killer.
